Baildon Wesleyan Methodist chapel

The society active as Baildon Methodist church in 2022  meets in the former Wesleyan Methodist chapel on Newton Way, Baildon BD17 5NH. The chapel dates from 1890 and you can read a detailed history here.

In October 2022 I’d been visiting Saltaire and decided to add pictures of Baildon Prim and Wesleyan chapels. I took pictures of the Wesleyan chapel on Newton Way – but when I reached home to create this page I realised the pictures were nothing like those on the Baildon  church website.

The other oddity I noticed was that old Ordnance Survey maps did not show Newton Way even as late as 1934.  That map includes The Brow, but The Brow does not appear on the 1913 map.  I realised that I’ve actually photographed the rear of the chapel, and it had been built behind the houses on Westgate and was accessed through an alley.

The maps show a Sunday school to the east of the chapel building, which was enlarged between the 1906 and 1913 maps.

So we still need a picture of the front of the chapel!
