The key is held in a wooden box and inside is the following type-written note:

“The day was fine and a goodly number gathered at the opening ceremony. Punctually at three o’clock, hymn 994 was sung and then Mr W Dawson engaged in prayer. The Rev F R Smith on behalf of the Trustees, presented a silver key to Miss Edith Sumner of Farnworth, Bolton, who, after unlocking the door and declaring the Chapel open for worship, addressed the friends in the enclosure, in a graceful and very appropriate little speech. The chapel was soon well occupied and the Rev Campbell Jeffries preached from the text Matthew xxi 28-34”
