Where's the key?

This smart presentation box has been in a cupboard at High Street Methodist Church, Harpenden for decades, but no one can remember ever seeing the key. I wonder where it has got to?

The lock has been changed (more than once I should think) so the key wouldn’t be much use, but the box is not worth keeping without it!

The text reads:

THIS KEY

WAS USED BY

MRS. H. HUMPHREY

ON THE OCCASION OF THE OPENING OF THE

WESLEYAN METHODIST CHURCH

HARPENDEN.

17TH SEPTEMBER 1930

Mrs Humphrey was one of the oldest class leaders at the time. The minister was Rev Leslie Keeble, who had overseen the building project and the transfer from the previous building on Leyton Road which had proved too small.

It was the trustees, notably Mr George Phillips, JP, a local councillor, who had the vision to purchase a large site in the centre of Harpenden High Street.

At the opening celebration service, the preacher was Dr Samuel Parkes Cadman from New York and the first hymn was

The Church’s one foundation

Is Jesus Christ her Lord…….
