At Durley, in the Southampton Circuit, aged 76, James Hockley; having been 50 years an efficient Local Preacher, and 44 years a Class-Leader. His piety was elevated, shining clearly and brightly through a long life. For upwards of 30 years he endured great and unremitting bodily pain, yet his sorrowing widow attests that, during the whole period, he never uttered an unkind or even a hasty word. His Christian graces were refined and strengthened by the severe test. In Durley and neighbourhood, where the excellence of his teaching was confirmed by that of a blameless life, he was made the instrument of much good. His mental powers were of uncommon grasp. The close of his life was marked by serenity. He spoke of the happiness and love he enjoyed, and departed in the full hope of eternal glory. JL.
