CHESTERS, George Massey 1871 - 1949

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 131

Born at Liverpool in 1871. After a course at the Liverpool Institute, he took up a commercial career. He was converted in the Young Men’s Class at Great Homer Street. He early felt the call to preach, and at the age of twenty-two was accepted as a candidate for the Wesleyan Ministry, entering Didsbury College in 1893.

After training, he served three or more years in circuits in various parts of England. Having spent forty-one years in the active work his zeal was unabated and he became the chaplain at Brentwood.

He cultivated a studious mind and read daily the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures. His sermons showed careful thought and reflected a rich experience. In disposition he was friendly and cheerful, and was assiduous in his visitation of the sick and suffering.

A loyal colleague, humble in heart, he rejoiced in the success of others. His home life was a benediction to both kinsfolk and friends, and his talented family bear witness to his sustained sacrifice and gracious personality. Many will give God thanks upon every remembrance of him.

He heard God’s ‘ Well done ‘ on 9th November 1949, in the seventy-eighth year of his age and the fifty-fourth of his ministry.
