HARDCASTLE, John William 1862 - 1949

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 130

Born at Armley, Leeds, in 1862. After his training at Headingley College, he began his ministry in 1889. He travelled in circuits in Yorkshire and Lancashire, with the exception of two circuits in the West Country. He lived for his Church, and throughout his active ministry of forty years witnessed a good confession in every circuit in which he travelled.

He was a capable administrator and preacher, but excelled as a pastor, and his passion was to serve. To every call of the Church he readily responded, and by his modest disposition, lovable character, and faithful discharge of duty he won the affection and confidence of all our people. He left behind him cherished memories in every circuit in which he laboured, and all who knew him thank God on every remembrance of him.

After his retirement from active service he rendered conspicuous service for the church at Crosland Hill, and will long be remembered by old and young with profound thankfulness.

He entered the Homeland on 5th November 1949, at the age of eighty- seven, in the sixty-first year of his ministry, and the large congregation which gathered at Buxton Road, where the funeral service was held, was a striking testimony to his character and influence.
