PEARSON, Herbert 1883 - 1949

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1950, page 124

Born at Hunton, Yorkshire, in 1883. He came of a farming family, and was brought up in an atmosphere of vigorous rural Methodism. He was educated at Queen’s College, Taunton, and entered the Wesleyan Ministry in 1910. Most of his service was fulfilled in northern circuits, where his memory is warmly cherished.

During the First World War he served as a chaplain to the Forces in France. After one year in the Luton Hightown Circuit, he became a Supernumerary in 1937, and continued to reside there.

He was a man of sensitive reserved nature, but of deep conviction. An accident sustained just before entering Richmond College, and the comparatively early loss of his wife, laid a burden upon him which helped to bring about his somewhat early retirement.

His knowledge of approaching death was illumined by a deep trust in God and a calm courage. Within a few days of the end, he could affirm with impressive confidence that no man could I have had more convincing evidence than he of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in the crises of his life.

He leaves two sons, whose loyal attachment to the Methodist Church maintains a long family tradition.

After a year of failing health, he died on 2nd September 1949, at the age of sixty-six in the thirty-ninth year of his ministry.
