POLLARD, Charles (M.A.) 1874 - 1962

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 205

Born in Liverpool in 1874. He was brought up in a fine Methodist family and early in life dedicated himself to his Master’s service. He was educated at Liverpool College and at Cambridge.

At the age of twenty-one he was accepted for the Ministry and offered for overseas work. After a short period of training at Didsbury he was called out to fill a vacancy at the Royapettah College, Madras, where he served with distinction for eighteen years, first as Assistant Principal and then as Principal.

He came home in 1914. and owing to the outbreak of the first World War remained in home circuits, serving in Bridlington, Denby Dale, Shipley, Coventry, Cleethorpes, Huntingdon, Newmarket and Chatham.

He was a very effective preacher, but was especially loved as a faithful visitor and pastor.

He became a supernumerary in 1939, assisted for three years in the oversight of Wesley’s Museum, City Road, and finally went to live in Wingrave in the Aylesbury Circuit.

While in retirement he continued to serve the Church most helpfully ; as a class-leader he was a constant and welcome visitor in the homes of the people, and he took frequent Sunday appointments as long as his strength permitted.

He loved his books, and he loved his garden, but he loved people more. He was a delightful companion, with a rare sense of humour, and the joy of the Lord was in his heart.

He died on 24 January 1962, in the eighty-eighth year of his age, and the sixty fifth of his ministry.
