WINTER, William Jessop 1876 - 1961

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 192

Born in Banwell, Somerset, in 1876. A son of the manse, he was educated at Kingswood School and trained for the Ministry at Handsworth College.

From 1901 he travelled in circuits in Cornwall, Devon. London, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Lancashire.

He was a good preacher and was blessed with a fine voice. He loved his people and his books, and to the end was a prodigious reader, especially of religion, philosophy and biography.

He had a fine grasp of Church and national affairs, and despite advancing years was alive to the opportunity and mission of the Church in the nuclear age.

He was a man of sound judgement and clear decision and a most capable administrator. His graciousness of character endeared him to all who knew him and it was a joy to be in his company.

Although for the last ten years he was not able to conduct worship, it was an inspiration to any preacher to have him in the congregation. He is remembered with affection and gratitude, and all over Methodism there are those who praise God that they came under the influence of his ministry.

He died on 7 September 1961, in the eighty-fifth year of his age and the sixtieth of his ministry.
