SMITH, Horace 1904 - 1962

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 200

Born at Beeston, Nottinghamshire, in 1904. He was educated at the Nottingham Grammar School and his early life showed a marked tendency toward the Ministry of the Church.

After being trained at Didsbury College, Manchester, he entered the active work in the London Mission, and subsequently served with great acceptance in the Lowestoft, .Beccles, Belper. Diss, Sowerby Bridge. Liverpool and Sydenham Circuits before going to Bristol East in 1959.

He was a gifted preacher, expounding the Scriptures with a quiet forcefulness which challenged and inspired. His choice command of the English language revealed a man of culture, and his apt illustrations manifested his able assessment of the human needs.

His life and work bore eloquent testimony to the faith he so ably proclaimed. As a pastor he gave himself unsparingly to the needs of his people, and with patience and tender sympathy led them to the source of his own great strength of character.

In prayer he left his hearers always at the throne of grace. In administration he discharged his duties with meticulous care. He sought no praise for himself, but, humble to a fault, his one desire seemed to be that others should shine.

In colleagueship he was a brother beloved. Toward the end, the strain of his labours took a heavy toll of his health, and though he strove manfully on, the call came suddenly.

After a long, exacting day he retired to bed, and in the early hours of the morning, his earthly sleep was peacefully exchanged for eternal rest.

He died on 2 January 1962 at the age of fifty-eight. in the thirty-second year of his ministry.
