Built in 1815 it was replaced by Wordsworth Street in 1872. Sandgate was sold for £700 and later became a Primitive Methodist Church which closed in 1967 when it joined with Wordsworth Street, forming Penrith Methodist Church.

Sandgate Head continued as a Methodist place of worship until 1967. Subsequently it was empty for many years but in 2014 it was being converted for residential use.

In 1851 had 152 free and 428 other sittings (TNA HO129/565.1.8.16). By 1873 it was said to have seating for 1000 (Wesleyan seating returns). The cumulative cost of construction and improvements to 1862 was £1585 (CASC DFCM/1/2/81). It closed for Wesleyan worship when Wordsworth Street opened in 1872/3.
