Greasborough Wesleyan Methodist

Sunday School Prizes through the family

Kelly’s 1881 Directory lists Greasbrough [near Rotherham, South Yorkshire] as being a large village, and among the churches listed it includes a Chapel for Wesleyans (rebuilt in 1848). This is recalled as being a fancy brick building on Church Street which had pews. It is unknown when it closed or was demolished.

It is known that members of my husband’s family attended the Wesleyan Chapel from 1891, this can be seen from surviving Sunday School prizes which are still with members of the family. The books show a variety of inscriptions and book plates. Each family member has been divided by a book cover.

Wilfred Adams was born in 1886, he had 6 brothers and sisters. His daughter Lucy was born 1912, and son Harold born 1918. There were also 5 other children who possibly went to the Wesleyan Chapel. After Lucy’s marriage to Alfred Marples in 1933 her daughter Shirley was born in 1935 and son Malcolm was born in 1939. Shirley and Malcolm went to both the Wesleyan Chapel and the Primitive Methodist Chapel (also in Greasbrough) at various stages of their lives.

From the book inscriptions and what is personally known, the families attendance at church was just in their younger lives.

Note, the spelling of Greasbrough/Greasbro varies throughout the years and on different documents.
