BINNS, Colin Edward 1910 - 1962

Obituary from the Minutes of the Methodist Conference 1962, page 211

Born at Gomersal, Yorks., in 1883. He entered the Ministry of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1910, proud to have been the follower of his father and grandfather. After being trained at Handsworth College he went to Trinidad, but ten years later returned to England.

Thereafter he retained a most intense and lively interest in Overseas Missions, regularly taking special meetings and anniversaries.

He travelled in Shotley Bridge, Hexham, Stoke-on-Trent. Haslingden, Nelson, Oldham, Walkden, Heywood and Bolton.

In 1947 he became an active supernumerary at Market Drayton for a further two and a half years.

Subsequently he made his home first in Nottingham and finally at Frome, where he was able, though an invalid, to take part in the life of the Church, to fulfil a few preaching appointments, and to enjoy his garden, the bird life of the countryside and his fine stamp collection.

During his illness, and in his previous uncertainty about his condition, he was full of thought for others, cheerful at home and courageous in suffering.

His thankful memories included a period as District Chapel Secretary and a time when he gave personal oversight of the building of the new church at Tunstall.

Meticulous care went to the preparation of his sermons and addresses ; he read widely but had time to talk with genuine concern for those who needed him ; and he visited the sick with great devotion.

In Frome he welcomed the opportunities for getting to know clergy and ministers of all denominations. He was a modest but a most effective circuit minister.

He died on 19 March 1962, in the seventy-ninth year of -his age and the fifty-second of his ministry.
